Today we left for Ogallala, a short drive over rolling hills; climbing in elevation a little over flat plains of corn fields and farms along the North Platte River. After setting up, we went to Open Range Grill that was recommended for lunch.
We are reminded of the history of the area by murals and wooden carved figures around town. Ogallala is the end of the cattle drives bringing cattle up from Texas to the railroad yards that transported them to either coast. There are many books, stories, movies and television series about this end of the trail town.
After relaxing we tried to find the Ogallala Elks lodge. After some investigation we found that they moved from address I had. We called for the correct address and was told that tonight was STAG night, boys only. So we went back to camp and had our own happy hour outside. Sue made us all what she called “boiled dinner” everything all in one pot and quite good. We stayed outside until the bugs were annoying us.
