RT 66 Park on Lake Overhoser

Section of Rt 66 in OK

63 Chevy Impala at Rt 66 museum. Clinton, OK

Trying to catch up with our trip. We drove from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Tx on Thursday. It was an uneventful trip but fun!! We spent a lot of time on Rt 66. Just outside of Ok City we took a side trip around Lake Overholser which is a man made reservoir. We also stopped a small Rt 66 Park. It had a nice map of Rt 66 inlaid in the patio area in front of the pavilion, very similar to the MS River map on Mud Island in Memphis.

While driving around the lake, we saw several people fishing from the shore. We were curious what they were fishing for so we stopped and talked to an elderly gentleman named George. He very friendly and more than happy to visit with us. Not only did he tell us they were fishing for catfish, he commenced to give us the history of this lake and two other lakes in the area. We spent about thirty minutes with him. It was great!

We continued on to Amarillo stopping in El Reno, Ok for a onion burger at Sid’s grill. This area started cooking these back during the Depression. It was a way to make the hamburger meat go further. They throw a handful of thinly sliced onions on the griddle for a few minutes then put the hamburger patties on top of the onions, mashing the onions into the burger. It was very good! Janice even ate one and she NEVER gets onions on her burgers!

We continued our drive on as much of Rt 66 as we could. I attached a picture of a section of the “Mother Road”. It was so cool driving down this iconic piece of Americana!! Especially with the top down listening to the ca plunk, ca plunk, ca plunk the tires made on the old concrete.

One final stop at the 66 museum in Clinton, Ok then on to Amarillo.

I thought this would be a very short post...
