First Winter Away - 2005 travel blog

The sun is out, the temperature is mild and we move quickly and easily through the ever ascending miles. Our truck is up to the towing challenge, but the diesel consumption increases dramatically. Not too long after Albuquerque we stop at a rest area that catches our eye. A large shanty town of wooden buildings shelters the picnic tables, reminding us that most of the year this land is ungodly hot. A sign warning us to watch out for rattle snakes tells us that we aren't in Illinois anymore. We pass surprisingly green fields bisecting the desert; some are vineyards. Pecans are for sale along the side of the road. Signs of human habitation are few and the small town of Deming offers all the comforts of city life to farmers and ranchers from miles around. We find ourselves relishing the plenitude that is Walmart and stock up on fresh produce and warm socks. A campground kitty purrs on my lap and all is well with the world. 355 miles
