Roquetas de Mar marina - calm after the storm

Strong winds of force 6-7 were forecast but as we were going to be sailing downwind we decided it should be OK with a reef in the mainsail. There wasn’t much wind to start with and we considered shaking the reef out, but were extremely glad that we didn’t because by 13:00 the wind was blowing at 28 knots and for the next few hours it was averaging 35 knots and gusting to over 40 knots – exhilarating at times and downright scary at others… Checking the Beaufort Scale later it transpired that the wind had actually been force 8 (gale) gusting to force 9 (severe gale) so no wonder it was exciting and the sea was very rough!! We made it safely into the marina at Roquetas de Mar after 46 nautical miles in 8 hours and stayed there the following day for some rest and recuperation.
