Crossing the bridge to Wisconsin...
Loved this home on the lake in Superior...
We added another awesome lighthouse to our list today, this time in Superior, Wisconsin. Wisconsin is only a few miles away from Duluth, we crossed the bridge and drove about thirteen miles to see the Wisconsin Point Light. This lighthouse hunting is going to be a good thing for us. The drive to the lighthouse was outstanding. We saw so many new birds in the area I had to make a lot of stops just to take pictures of them to find in my bird books later.
A narrow ten-mile long sand bar stretches between the twin ports of Duluth and Superior. Reputedly the longest freshwater sand bar in the world, the bar is split by a natural opening in it’s approximate center. Appropriately, the bar on the Minnesota side of the opening is known as Minnesota Point, and the bar on the Wisconsin side is known as Wisconsin Point. I was not sure how to locate the lighthouse so I just put Wisconsin Point Beach in my gps, it took us right to it. :-)
The lighthouse was surrounded with huge rocks, we walked the long smooth part of the jetty, but when it got too rocky, we decided to zoom pictures from there. This area also has lots of places to pull over and walk to the beach areas for swimming. It was windy and cool today and we still saw people jumping the waves. It looks just like ocean waves, they have a lot of warning about how bad the riptides are in the area, you could not pay me enough to swim there, but it was fun watching the brave souls that did.
After viewing the lighthouse, we stopped to watch a jet ski competition going on at Barker’s Island plus a lot more. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Check back later for more from Minnesota and Wisconsin.
