Christchurch street art

Old Christchurch street

185 empty chairs

Burgers!

Following our long journey to Christchurch we were happy to be back in a city again. Christchurch was pretty much flattened in an earthquake only 6 years ago and you can still see the scars today. For example the Cathedral is still being rebuilt as is much of the city. They estimate it could take up to 30 years to fully rebuild the city again.

The weather was beautiful so we decided to make the most of it. We visited the Canterbury museum which was excellent and included a very interesting exhibition of Japanese tattooing and also a typical Christchurch street as it would have looked a hundred years ago.

After this we visited the botanical gardens and then headed over to the 185 white chairs which is a tribute to the 185 people who died in the 2011 earthquake. The site is incredibly moving as each chair is different yet the setting is very simple.

In the evening we decided to push the boat out and go out for a meal. We had read great reviews about a new burger restaurant and so headed for that. The burgers were amazing and very filling.

Tomorrow we begin our road trip to Queenstown which will see us go past beautiful lakes and New Zealand's tallest mountain... Fingers crossed the weather holds up!
