We took the motor home into the shopping centre to fuel up and collect some more groceries. When we came back the boys of course had to have a swim. The bus picked us up for the whale watching after lunch. The water was calm and with a gentle breeze, a lovely afternoon was expected. The skipper, Cameron was a nice bloke who spent some time in Charters Towers on a drilling rig and Steph the French/Canadian was delightful. We cruised out on the Kai-Aura and spotted some whales playing from a distance. A familiar occurrence for the whole afternoon - always in the distance. We did spend quite a deal of time beside a mother and a newly born calf (the closest we got to whales) before more sightings of whales playing. We saw plenty of large turtles, sea snakes and jelly fish as well. We cruised on home, the skipper was disappointed we did not see more action and while we were as well, the cruise itself was delightful and made up for it. The food and drinks were constantly flowing the whole time. The skipper even left Brenton drive the boat (GPS assisted!) for a while on the way back. We arrived back just as the sun was setting over the water....beautiful. Of course the boys loved the ride on the Sea-legs, the $120000 boat on wheels! A late arrival back to the park meant home made pizzas in the Weber ... scrumptious.
