Today was a very good day for stalking bluebonnets (and other wildflowers). Nancy Riley and I left at 9:00 this morning and got back home well after 6:00. We had a wonderful time and were very happy that the predicted stormy weather did not arrive.
Texas highway 16 between Fredericksburg and Llano, especially in Llano County, offered some of the best views. We were also well rewarded in the Lake Buchanan area. Of course, Sweet Pea just would not go past very many of those places. :>)
We had lunch in Llano at the Acme Café and Grill across the street from the Llano County Courthouse. After lunch we walked around the square for a few minutes and in the little city park. Then we stopped at the visitor center across the river. We had planned to visit the Llano Museum but it was closed.
One of the most outstanding sites was a very dense and HUGE area of bluebonnets growing in the dry areas of the Lake Buchanan lake bed. Normally the water is just a few feet from some of the roads but the lake level is still well below normal due to the extreme drought conditions of the last two years. Our photos just cannot show the scope of that beautiful blue expanse of flowers.
Leaving the Buchanan area, we drove through Burnet. We stopped in Marble Falls to have some pie at the Bluebonnet Café before heading home. What a nice experience we had today!
