Marlborough Sounds

Picton at dawn

Stunning scenery on way to Christchurch

We started our long journey from windy Wellington to Picton on the south island by catching the slow boat to make the crossing. The boat was a lot bigger than we expected with ten decks and a lovely cafe, there was even a cinema on board! The journey was to take 3 hours and 40 minutes. The first hour of the journey was very smooth with a lovely view of Wellington, we even laughed that maybe we should not have taken the sea sickness tablet, then it all changed! As soon as we sailed out of the bay the waves changed and the journey became like a roller coaster. So many people were sea sick at this point we were very happy we had taken the tablets.

About a hour before arriving in Picton the scenary changed again and we had the lovely view of Marlborough Sounds. The water was such a beautiful colour with the rolling hills a variety of greens.

Picton was a scenic town which we did not get to see much of as Adam did not feel well so went to bed to rest. We think he had caught a chill and was sick.

The next day we had a 9 hour bus journey from Picton to Christchurch and could not cancel anything at such late notice. Adam decided he felt a little better so lucky for us we made the journey. The views from the coach were breath taking with vineyards stretching for miles and snow peaked mountains behind.

We were both relived to have made Christchurch now to explore the South Island.
