Hiro on the packed train heading home after the game

On 11th Feb we went to Yokohama Nissan Stadium to watch the soccer game, Japan VS Australia World Cup Qualifying match. This is very important game for both Japan and Australia to go through Asia-Pacific Qualifying stage. At the moment Australia is the top of the ladder and Japan comes second in our group, top 2 teams will go through to World Cup final in South Africa 2010.

We were very excited to wear Aussie shirts that we bought in Thailand (fake ones of course). Hiro was going for Australia this time as he is now in Japan, he’d like to support the away team. He has now spent 1/3 of his life in Australia and he loves both Japanese and Aussie teams. Last thing he wanted was Japan and Australia being in the same group, but somehow it always happens…

Anyway we took a train to Yokohama Stadium surrounded by many Blue Japanese supporters all watching Hiro suspiciously wondering why the hell this Japanese guy is wearing Aussie uniform.

We were so glad to see some Aussie supporters when we got to the Stadium, and one of the guys gave us black armbands for the victims involved in Victoria bushfire. We had reserved seats on 2nd floor, but decided to join Aussie supporter section downstairs, and we loved it. However we felt like we were back home, with Aussie flags hoisted high, people in yellow and green singing Waltzing Matilda, and balloon Kangaroos jumping around. There were 70,000 Japanese supporters there in the stadium, and Aussie supporters were only about 300, but we were much louder than Japan side!

After a minute silence moment for Victorian Bushfire victims, the game finally started. Japan was pushing hard throughout the game and created many chances but was unable to score against defensive Australia, and the game finished scoreless draw. It was good fun to watch it though. Aussie side was getting quieter as the game went, as everyone was getting drunk I guess, and so was Hiro. Great night!!

Our thoughts are with you Victorians,

Lexi and Hiro
