The road (US 54) from Liberal, KS, to Tucumcari, NM, is a familiar one. We have traveled it at least once ever since we started wintering in AZ. We like the red road and US 81 south from SD thru NE & KS is a drive we love. I love the wide open spaces and the little towns and we both like the slower pace and lack of traffic.

I did very little navigating as there we didn't have to change highways nor were there many turns. A couple of by-passes around some of the towns but most of them we went thru either main street or the road next to the grain elevators.

And, of course, we traveled in 4 states. Started in KS and cut thru the pan handles of OK and TX to end up in NM.

Tucumcari (I love the name as it makes me want to giggle) is a Route 66 town. It has the kitchiest (if that is a word) architecture and signage. All art deco and Route 66. I will add more pictures after we go out this afternoon.

We arrived at the Elks Lodge around 3. We are now in mountain time so we had to change all the clocks. We have water and electric here. You pay $15 for the first night and get the second night free.

The hookups are on just a gravel lot with a lot of goathead weeds. If you have never stepped on a goat head - believe me it hurts. They are 3 pronged stickers that hook on to your shoes and then come off in the carpet of the MH. Step on one of them on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night and you know it.

We had a steak last night at the Liberal Elks so I didn't want to go to our usual KBobs for steak again. So we headed Del's. It got great reviews and said that they had real potatoes. One of my pet peeves is a great restaurant with good food and they ruin it with instant potatoes. Anyway, I had a grilled chicken breast with steamed veggies and Ron had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. They were both good, but his was best. Of course, I tried the potatoes. They were wonderful. The salad bar was fantastic. Every thing was cold and crisp and fresh. They even had jicama. If you don't know what that is - Google it. Kinda a cross between a radish and something sweeter - crisp, juicy and very good. Very low cal, too. I think we will go back for the salad bar and a side of mashed potatoes tonight.

We then went to KMart (they don't have a Wally) for a few things and came back to call it an early night. We will do a bit more shopping today (Sunday) and hit the road on Monday.
