The Whiting's Great Alaskan Adventure travel blog

Thought we would check out the local fish hatchery, but it was closed and only open for research. Instead we drove to the other side of the lake to the town of Bigfoot. It was a very touristy, artsy town. Checked a few shops, one I found a few ornaments. Also found a yogurt place and had huckleberry yogurt with huckleberries on top. These are a very popular flavor of everything in this area. Look like small blueberries and a sweet berry. Next found a small distillery to tour and have samples of gin, rum, vodka, moonshine and kirsh. It was their second year since opening and they already sold out of the first year's whiskey. Not quite the same as wine tasting. One sip and a horrible face and Mom said NO more. Dad passed. We did buy some coconut rum, but it is not quite like Parrot Bay...just rum with a hint of coconut! Did a little more site seeing in the car till time to visit the George family. Jackie and Lori knew each other as Air Force nurses in the medical "bootcamp" and again in battlefield nursing when they were prepping to go to overseas bases. We met her husband Dr Tom George (a dermatologist) and their kids. They had a terrific steak dinner for us with all the trimmings as well as cheesecake with huckleberry sauce...SO GOOD!! Had a great visit and did not get home till 11pm again!!
