|Sun, 14 Aug: On the road again... We departed Madison's Alliant Energy Center rally parking area about 0715. Many coaches had departed yesterday, but the majority were still parked and we didn't want to get stuck in the line when most left. An early start was our solution.
The drive from Madison to Forest City took us five hours and we covered 264 miles. Our route was US 18 all the way to Clear Lake where we moved onto US 69 for the ten mile run north to Forest City. With very few exceptions the road was smooth and a pleasure to drive. We stopped for lunch at a K-Mart parking lot (yes Cathie, K-Mart) in Charles City, IA.
One of the most pleasurable factors in taking non-Interstate highways is the small towns through which we pass. Several towns in western Wisconsin and Iowa have downtowns little changed for decades. The one in Postville, IA (see image) intrigued us and was worthy of a "shot". Life in the "slow lane" suits these two retirees just fine.
We arrived at the Winnebago Customer Service facility about 1330 and found a spot in the main lot. It was a good thing that we arrived as early as we did because by mid afternoon all the spots were full and customers were parking in the overflow lots at the Visitor's Center and rallygrounds. We're plugged into power (30 ampere) for the first time since Monday. We can live very well on our batteries and generator, but it is sure nice to have power all the time.
Tomorrow will be an early day as we need to have Carpe ready to roll at 0700. Do hope they'll be able to take care of us with minimal delays.
