Christy and John's Travels travel blog

Arrived into Phuket airport and caught a taxi to the highway to wait for a public bus up to Khao Lak. It happened that a tour guide, Mr. Chu, on his way back to Khao Lak from the airport stopped and offered us a ride there for a bargain price. Very interesting 1+ hour journey learning about his life in Khao Lak - he is not only a tour guide, but also owns an ice cream shop and is the regional meteorologist. Very interesting to get his perspective on how the Tsunami had hit this small town particularly hard (80% of deaths in Thailand were here) and how the recovery is progressing. He also treated us to fresh roadside sugar cane drinks! Very nice man. In fact, we have really enjoyed the hospitality and genuine friendliness of the Thai people. No wonder it's called the land of smiles...

Came to Khao Lak as the jumping off point for the country's best diving in the nearby Surin and Similan Islands Marine National Parks. We went on a 3 day scuba trip on a live-aboard dive boat (see side trip), only spending two nights before and one night after the trip in the town. Cute, little resort town with a nice beach and more excellent food. Didn't get up to much except lounging by the pool and organizing our next trip a few hours north at Khao Sok National Park.
