|Just after the New Year’s party hustle finished, our friends from Port Douglas Heidi and Jorg visited us here in Japan on the way back from Belgium. It was always great to have someone we know back home who made an effort to come and visit us.
Their main purpose here in Japan was skiing, so we headed northeast to Hakuba, one of huge ski resort surrounded by snow-covered beautiful mountains. It took us about 5hours to drive there.
It was very first time for Lexi to try skiing, and it was quite hard. Hakuba once held a Winter Olympics, so it was very steep and difficult for beginners. However the view from the mountain was so beautiful and weather was great.
Back at Ryokan (traditional hotel) we enjoyed hot spring to ourselves as it was very quiet and no one else staying there that night. Being in very hot bath at -10°c outside was such experience. My body was warm but face was cold! We were also treated 10-course traditional Japanese cuisine every night. Each dish comes with a very small portion, and is very unique and varietal with fish, vegies, beef, deer and fruits, all ingredients are native to Nagano. Hiro was scared that it might be too unique for Heidi and Jorg, but we all enjoyed food there and finished pretty much everything served.
We wanted to see snow monkeys in hot spring but our car didn’t have snow tires and it was too dangerous to try to get there. Now we are heading back to Tokyo, our bodies are aching...
