We had a wonderful visit with Vickie, Betty, Sam, aunt Bette, Shirley and Dot. Dot took us on a tour of Holland and Grand Haven. We have two more lighthouses on our list. We especially loved the town of Holland. A large number of Dutch immigrants came to America in the mid-1880's prompted by religious prosecution in the Netherlands. Many of them settled in western Michigan. They founded Holland in 1847 and made it a traditional Dutch town including Old World houses, windmills, and parks planted with tulips. We all had fun trying on the wooden shoes and taking pictures in the area.

We loved the beautiful red lighthouse in Holland. To help guide both the commercial and private ships safely, the three-story Holland Harbor (Black Lake) was built in 1907. The Lighthouse is covered with steel to protect it from the heavy pounding during bad weather. The building is painted red to increase its visibility during daylight hours. Because of its color and size it has been nicknamed "Big Red." The lighthouse has a gray-shingled slate roof with twin gables and diamond-paned windows which add a unique touch to the building.

After the awesome tour we stopped for great burgers at Russ’s Restaurant. Their specialty was the green olive burger, it was delicious. After a fun day visiting we took Sammy home with us for a very special “early” Halloween festival at our campground. I will do a special update on this incredible Halloween party later. I am adding a lot of pictures trying to catch up and hope you enjoy. Check back later for more from Michigan.
