A bit of home in Malaysia

After several days on Redang Island where the snorkeling was amazing, but the buffet meals were dominated by choices like fish head curry, we were ready for a taste of home, and you couldn't find anywhere much more like home than Sunway Resort.

As anyone from Edmonton knows, the pinnacle of Canadian culture can be found in one place, West Edmonton Mall, and Sunway Resort was an excellent replica. We stayed at a hotel, connected to a shopping mall with lots of great stores and most importantly to us a connecting amusement park with a great waterpark, and roller coasters. They even had one whole area of the amusement park dedicated to the Wild West, complete with a ride where you flew around in giant cowboy boots while country music blasted in the background. You could not have made anything much more Albertan if you tried!

We started off our first day at Sunway with our first McDonald's meal in months, and then went to see the new Brad Pitt/ Angelina Jolie Movie (which is very weak by the way..).

The next day we explored the mall and amusement park, and went to see another movie, Batman returns. It was an excellent escape for a couple of days back to normalcy.

The roller coasters were great, and the waterpark was excellent. They had some great waterslides, and a wave pool where you could surf (unfortunately no surfing on the day we were there). Of course there were a few differences from home, perhaps one of the most interesting was seeing devote Muslim families at the water park. It was surprising to see women in full length black outfits and veils ridding waterslides, just as we had seen them snorkeling in their full attire on Redang Island. It certainly didn't look like the most comfortable outfits for either waterslides or snorkeling, but great to see they were enjoying themselves.
