This morning I drove over to Plains to the Maranatha Baptist Church where President and Mrs. Carter attend when they are in town. He taught Sunday School this morning. The lesson was on the "ups and downs" of Joseph's life and how the lessons apply to us today. It was a good class.
I stayed for morning worship, after which there were photo opportunities. President Carter said that, regarding the picture-taking, he used to say, "We'd be delighted." Now he says, "We are willing." Everybody got a kick out of that.
When the Carters are there, security is tight. The Secret Service men searched bags and used the wand on us. The sanctuary was already nearly full by 9:00, so a bunch of us had to go to the overflow room first. Seats are reserved for regular members but, if some of them don't show up by the time President Carter enters, their seats are given to others. President Carter came into the overflow room to greet us and to chat a minute before going into the sanctuary. Happily, I was allowed into the sanctuary a few minutes later. I was in the middle of a pew so I didn't have a clear view of him while he was teaching.
The photography coordinators did a good job of moving people along during the photo sessions. We were told to have our cameras ready and to step up quickly when it was our turn. The coordinators took the pictures. While awaiting my turn, I took a couple of shots of President and Mrs. Carter with large groups.
When I returned to the RV park, I paid for one more night. Some of the things I want to see are not open today.
