Two Hams in a Can travel blog

We arrived in Springfield, MO after a longer drive than we usually like. We believe in the 2-2-2 method - no more than 200 miles, arrive by 2 p.m., and stay at least 2 nights. We're doing none of that right now and we miss it.

We stayed at a small but inexpensive RV park right off the freeway to the east of Springfield proper. We've stayed there before - no frills - only $20 for full hookup, and filled our 30 lb. propane tank for $15.

We did unhitch here for we were on a mission. We had seen this restaurant - Lambert's - advertised on the Travel Channel as one of the top places to eat, so we were determined to give it a try. WOW!! It was worth it. It will definitely be one of our favorite stops next time through Springfield, MO.

They have really "down-home" cooking like Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy which we ordered, then you can add two sides. It all comes in a huge skillet and is more than a normal person can begin to eat. While you are waiting for this feast, a young man comes in the room and yells, "Hot Rolls!" You hold your hand up and he tosses you a hot roll. And they were GREAT! I never saw anyone drop a roll - the guy is really good at throwing them. And if that wasn't enough, they come around with what they call "pass arounds" Fried okra, fried potatoes and onions, black-eyed peas, sorghum, macaroni and tomatoes. Whatever and however many times you want them.

We packed up about half of our dinner to take home and rolled ourselves out the door.
