We had another great day with Jerry, we took him on a tour of the city. We paid about $4 each for an all day bus ticket, we hopped on and off buses all day touring. You could live really cheap here without a car. :-) We took him to all the special places, I have already done updates on most of them. You can look back and read about the Grand Canal etc. We also visited the incredible Miramare Castle, it was built by the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian so that the Commander of the Imperial Navy could gaze out at the often turbulent blue seas of the Adriatic.
It is situated just north of the city of Trieste, the beautiful white castle sits on the seas edge and has an impressive 54 acres of parks and gardens. Designed by the Archduke himself, with tropical and native plants within beautifully landscaped surroundings.
Designed and built between 1856 and 1860, the Archduke and his wife Charlotte had little use of the castle as he was appointed Emperor of Mexico in 1864 and was subsequently shot and died in 1867. Charlotte returned in 1866 and had a nervous breakdown before leaving for Belgium shortly afterwards.
All the rooms still feature the original furnishings, ornaments, furniture and objects dating back to the middle of the 19th century. As a result the castle has remained largely intact and gives the visitor an insight into the personality of Maximilian. You can actually take a tour of this awesome castle, we did’t take the tour today, we walked by the sea and enjoyed the view. Jerry decided to take a swim and enjoyed it much. It was another awesome day in Triest, check back later for more.
