Cobbled streets

Old Church with designs by aleijadinho

We arrived in Ouro Preto after a bumpy bus journey, and found a nice Pousada to stay in. The town is an old colonial town situated in, and surrounded by hills. There are lots of cobblestone streets winding up and down through the town and it is exhausting walking around.

On the first day we took a walk around the town and got our bearings. We had lunch in Cafe Geraes, which does lovely pasta dishes. The town was originally set up as a mining town and there is a gold mine nearby. They also mine many other minerals and gem stones in the area and there were lots of Jewellery shops for Monica to look at !! In the evening we had a nice dinner in Restaurant Casa Do Ouvidor before heading back.

The next day we took a trip out to the gold mine. The mine consists of several caves that are reached by a trip in a mining car (bit like a rollercoaster ride !). There is also an underground lake to see and dip your feet in. It was clear blue but rather cold ! For the rest of the day we walked around the cobble streets of Ouro Preto seeing some of the Cathedrals which are famous in the area. We looked at three before heading back to our Pousada. It then started to chuck it down with rain, so we ate snacks in the room rather than braving the weather to find a restaurant.

The next morning we checked out and made our way to the bus station to go to Belo Horizonte.
