March 11 - On the road - again! The lines are off (water and power rather than rope) and we are away. We took the scenic shore route (SR 35) through Palacios, Port Lavaca (would like to spend some time there), Point Comfort (with a very large Alcoa plant), Bay City and Wharton (both pretty towns) before hitting the US 59. Traffic was light (being a Saturday) until we hit Houston. 5 and 6 lanes each way going at a snail's pace. Finally we got through and on our way to our free night at Rayford Crossing in Spring, TX, on the north-west side of Houston. (route - SR 35/SR 60/US 59/I-610-I-45)
This is a gorgeous park! We would like to stay a second night, but the helpful (and honest) staff told us to forget going through Houson on a Monday, so we're here just the one night. We were told Houston weather was terrible (cold, rainy, blustery) in winter, and very hot and humid in the summer), but great here in spring and fall. The owner has put a lot of money in here for a two season operation. Only downside is $$WiFi - we have been spoiled with free cable internet! It is supposed to be free at our Monday stop, so we decided to wait.
Mike unhooked the 'dinghy' and we set off for the town of Old Town Spring, a very successful upscale salvaging of the old part of town. We spent a couple of hours wandering around and then came back to the park so we would have some time to enjoy just being there. It's a beautiful 85 degrees.
We're unsure where we'll be tomorrow night - the park I called was full but a couple of rigs were due to move so maybe we'll be lucky!
