Tom & Roberta take on Spain and Portugal 2015 travel blog

Tom and I decided to head towards the Gothic section of town and find fun tapas bars and taverns for dinner. Sort of graze our way through dinner. It had rained enough during the day that we were both soaked so we dried off at the hotel grabbed an umbrella and headed out.

The evening air was warm and clear and we enjoyed the walk towards the Gothic area. We happened into a tavern full of bright lights, lots of people and as is usual in Barcelona very friendly wait staff. We saddled up to the bar and ordered dos basses de vino tiento.

By the way, I know I have a heavy Spanish (though Latin America) heritage but I am here to say Spanish is just pouring out of my mouth and not just disjointed words. Complete sentences for every occasion! I walked up to a ticket kiosk and asked for 2 tickets, 1 general and 1 senior without even thinking "hmm how do you say that in Spanish?". I turned to Tom looking shocked he says "What?" I said "I'm speaking Spanish" and Tom says "well you should be.". There are also plenty of half Spanish half English sentences but all in all I figure I must be channeling my Mother.

Back to the tavern..........I'm starting to feel like food from the sea is important here. Last night the sushi at the bar and tonight every squiggly sea creature was available at the bar......... sardines, octopus, cuttlefish and more all soaking in olive oil waiting for someone to stick a toothpick in it and munch. YUCK! Give me that salted cured meat every time.

We left the tavern and intended to walked back to Hotel 1898 for more tapas and wine but found they had closed the roof bar due to the rain so we headed back towards our hotel.

Anybody out there see the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun?". There is s scene in the beginning where the American woman is wanting to purchase the Italian Villa but the Elderly owner can't make up her mind whether or not to sell to her. The woman cries out in Italian "I need a sign from God!". And in the next moment a bird flies over the American's head and drops a disgusting bomb.......... The Elderly owner immediately sees this not only as very good luck for the American but also the sign from God for which she wished.

Last night Tom not became lucky, he also received a "sign from God.". He could not wait to get back to the Hotel to completely remove the luck and sign.......nuf said...
