Today we went out w/ packs to the highway in front of The Pickled Onion (where we stayed) and flagged down 'The Ruta' tour bus which passes by at 9:30! For 50p ($4 US) the bus goes to Labna, Xlapak, Sayil, Kabah, & Uxmal...a speedy package out of Merida! See pics.

We originally thought that 30 min. each site would be fine and 2 hours at Uxmal might be short which would mean catching a later bus into Merida. As it turned out we could have used more time in Kabah because it's so spread out and didn't need 2 hours in Uxmal since it is very organized and concentrated, ha! This meant that we just loaded back up into the tour bus we came in, paid another 40p each and easily got into Merida finding Zacalo Hostel on main plaza, very convenient (plus a great breakfast included...350p for dbl room, no dorms avail due to Carnaval starting).

Overall, the day impressed me with the culture of Maya, etc...huge expansive area where water is a premium, only 3-4 mos. rainy season. Amazing so much was built in just the 300-400 years they say this area/civilization existed.

Got to Merida by 4, bought bus tickets to Cancun for tomor noon and then spent the nite hearing workers outside our window setting up stage fore Mardi Gras fest (see pic). Stage was just below our balcony window, ha! Huge breakfast but no hot shower...after a sweaty day a big boo hoo. Hostel is crowded w/ mostly young folks. Historic district is small, we walked it in less than 1 hour, the plaza is indeed one of the nicest we've seen - huge laurel trees w/ tons of birds squacking, it was deafening during our nighttime walk...outrageous, amazing. They must hose the place down frequently or else people would be ankle deep in bird doo doo!
