Skagway, AK - a look down Broadway Street

We got up and had a big breakfast before leaving for Skagway this morning. The drive down from Carcross is a little over 60 miles and the scenery is great. Most of the trip is spent climbing up to White Pass which is where the U.S./British Columbia border is. It is almost 3,300 feet at that point and this morning the clouds were hanging really low so that we were in the clouds ourselves. The trip through U.S. customs going down and Canadian customs coming back were both uneventful and quick.

As we were driving into Skagway we stopped at Jewell Gardens which is the premier gardens in the area. It was very nice but we are getting a little gardened out. We have seen some of the most beautiful in the world and it has ruined us for most others. This one does also have glassblowers and we watched them work on a vase for a while.

We then went into Skagway and did a little shopping and had lunch at the Red Onion Saloon. We both had sandwiches and they were very good. After lunch we saw the "The Days of 98 Show with Soapy Smith" which has been running for almost a hundred years. It was very interesting and gave the early history of Skagway much the way the Revue at Pioneer Park did for Fairbanks. We then came back to Carcross to get ready for the trip to Watson Lake, YT tomorrow. It looks to be about 240 miles so we hope the roads are good!
