For Spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountains majesty
Above the fruited plains
God shed His grace on thee
And crown Thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!!!!
It was just that kind of day and it started first thing in the morning! Trying to search always for new words that would describe what unfolds in front of us every day, changing every mile and it suddenly occurred to me, I don't have to find the words, they have already been written! I tried to match some photos to each line,, new and old photos that I felt represented the words of the son. It was a great day full of beauty and gifts!
While I was all occupied feeling so overwhelmed with emotion about the beauty of this country, we managed to sneak up and across yet another elevation gain of over 4,100 ft! Not even labeled as a pass, no celebration signs at the top! Just beauty heaped on beauty with forest fragrance in the air and the sound of rushing river below.
We finally descended into the little town of New Meadows, Idaho. I knew there was a hot springs with camping and had my heart set on it all day. Only another 5 miles, by now it was flat to downhill riding so we got there in no time prepared for dinner with a most delicious Subway wrap strapped to our bags! Easy no cook dinner!
The hot springs were wonderful! I thought so! They were old, very old and probably not updated for 50 years but i love that! Very hot! Very soothing and we soaked ourselves until our wrinkles had wrinkles!
When we checked in the proprietor let us set up camp under the day use area with grass and picnic tables. We didn't have to set up under the awning but I thought it would probably help keep the dew off the tent for a dry pack up in the morning. It was very cozy!
I went into the "recreation building area" to take advantage of the WiFi and started talking to young Hayden. He only had 2 days left of school, very charming young man and fun to talk to about his plans for the summer. Then his grandmother Penny came in and we chatted some more! So fun hearing stories of locals and Penny had let us know she has been coming to the hot springs since she was a child, brought all her children here and now it has been sold! Going to be upgraded and the characteristic filled recreation center building was to be torn down! Sometimes I just hate progress!
We had such a great chat, Penny and Hayden invited us to come and stay with them only 5 minutes away! It sounded absolutely fabulous but we were "soaked out of energy", were all settled in with our tent pitched,so we very graciously declined. I think we will be in touch for a long time tho, it was that kind of connection!
Off we went and tucked ourselves into our sleeping bags ready to sleep or read and noticed the wind getting a bit gusty! Long story short, the wind tested our tent for about an hour before the rain hit! I don't think the rain can simply be called rain! What is another word for the skies opening up???? We were so grateful to be under the awning of the day shelter! The rain was hitting the metal roof of the shelter so hard we had to shout to be heard and we were right next to each other! Hard to tell where the sound of the wind stopped and the sound of the thundering rain took over! Throw a little . . . No a lot! . . .of lightning and thunder into the mix and you have a very exciting evening to be in a tent!
It kept us awake for awhile, but other than some drifting rain from the wind, we were nice and dry! Amazing! I am telling you . . .someone is watching over us!!!!
I lost my internet connection last night, so if you have already looked at the today's entry and only saw photos, that is why it was incomplete. I am catching up now!
I hope you took a moment and to sing along in a verse of America the Beautiful with me and think about the words . .. it is so true.
If you aren't sure . . .then you need to take a trip!!
Love you all!
