There is a 9 mile drive through this refuge, along with many bike paths and even the opportunity to kayak down the Manistique River which goes through part of it. Today, I drove through the gravel drive to get a taste of what is here. There are many little lakes with cattails and long grasses on the edges and it looked like the right place to find a moose or two. What I found instead were trumpet swans and loons. I was intrigued with the swans because they spent more time with their heads under water and their bums up in the air than gliding across the lakes. I could have watched them for a long time, but I had to move on. Then I saw the loons and was also impressed. The great blue heron didn’t escape my sight either. It’s great to see this after Labor Day so that it’s quiet and peaceful, allowing one to hear the birds and squirrels in the area. I will come back to visit here before I leave – it’s free, too!
