Beach Time in Thailand

Winter break was winding down and with only four days left we wanted some beach time. After consulting the Lonely Planet we decided on Hua Hin, a three hour bus ride from Bangkok. It was nice to hang out at the beach and relax for a few days. Our hotel was on the water, but we had a 20 minute walk to a prime spot on the beach. Each afternoon we parked ourselves for eats and drinks with a dip in the blue ocean to cool down under the blazing afternoon sun. I could have used a week of this to rest and recharge my batteries.

Donna and I were on the verge of being templed out after three days in Angkor and Bangkok, but there was one last place to visit about an hour by private car from Hua Hin; a hilltop palace and underground temple at Phetchaburi, I did not want to miss. The view from Phra Nakhon Khiri Park was grand with an unobstructed 360 degree view of the area. The cool breeze didn’t hurt because it was really hot and humid. January thru April is the hot season for Thailand, before the rainy season begins in May and runs until October. Our second stop of the day was Tham Khao Luang a dramatic stalactite-filled cave which is one of Thailand’s most impressive shrines. Once dropping down some steep stairs, the central Buddha figure is illuminated with a heavenly glow as sunlight filters in through a natural skylight.

After a hot day of taking in the sites, it was time to head back for a dip in the ocean and some cool tropical drinks. It’s amazing how quickly four days goes by on vacation, to bad work days does not go as fast.

We arrived in Shanghai to overcast and cold conditions. Our first day back to work in Changzhou we awoke to 6” of snow. Back to the harsh reality of not being in the tropics.
