Xe Pian Wetlands - Kingfisher

Kingfisher Ecolodge, run by an Italian. Fabulous food, decent accommodation, excellent nearby walks, elephants and ruins. A lovely place to chill for a couple of days but very remote within the Champasak Province.

Visit Kingfisher Ecolodge

Part of the National Protected Area of Xe Pian, this area is about 80 km south of Pakse and covers some 2,400 square kilometres over Champasak and Attapeu Provinces and shares a border with Cambodia. Unfortunately, there are few funds available for this area and only two forest rangers apparently, yet there are all kinds of key species (if you go trekking for long enough) including tigers, Asian elephant, gaur, sun bear, Asiatic black bear and yellow-cheeked crested gibbon, plus the highest number of birds recorded in all of Laos (although Alan and I only saw beautiful coloured birds destined for the pot on a previous visit to the region). This may be because the Brau (Lavae) are 'great hunters'.
