McElholum road trip - up the Centre 2012 travel blog

Returned to Merl for cultural painting activity ran by rangers with two local artists, Trevor and Gershen. Made brushes by chewing on reeds. Learnt of the 'cross-hatching' technique with the fine lines decorating the painting which is a feature of the area and evident on the rock art. Kids lucky to have this special time only sharing with about 10 other people. These activities over the previous 3 months have been filled with up to 80 people. The ranger informed us that only 3 weeks ago camp ground were all at capacity throughout Kakadu, now grounds only 10%. Movie on at poolside after dark. 'Ten canoes', an old black and white movie about aboriginal life and customs.
