'The Island'

San Martin de los Andes lakefront beach

We checked out of our "homestay" and headed into town where we had made a reservation with Hostal Puma. Back in familiar territory, cosy YHA hostel at a bargain price in the centre of town we were much happier. The friendly staff even talked us out of spending $$ on a cruise around the lake and suggested a quiet beach with an island that we could swim out to.

The walk to the beach was 30 minutes uphill and the same again back down. At the top we had to pay 1 peso each to access the beach and the mirador (lookout). Instructions on how to get to these places was not included though and we were simply waved in the direction of a dusty dirt track. Thankfully we found the beach, as had plenty of other sunworshippers. We spent the afternoon between the icy waters of the lake, the scorching hot beach, and my favourite, the shade of the many trees.

At 5pm it was still scorching hot. Who said it was cooler down south? We dragged our selves back along the dusty track in to town and into a welcome shower back at the hostal. Much later, and fortified with local beers and piscos, we braved the crowds of the unrelenting main street in search of food. We seem finally to have slipped into the Argentinian rhythm of life as it was 11 by the time we sat down to eat in a packed bar/cafe and realised we had no pictures of the pretty little town which feels like a Swiss ski resort.
