CARE Volunteers Wishing Me a Happy Birthday

Glenda Alexander with Surprise Gift

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I hadn’t expected anything special for my birthday today. However, when I stepped outside this morning to go to breakfast, there was a little gift bag for me! Nina had given me a lovely card and a bottle of Body Fantasies “Fresh White Must” body mist. I really like the fragrance. Nina is such a generous person!

Later this morning all the volunteers at CARE surprised me with a balloon and piece of birthday cake, complete with a lit candle. They sang the birthday song, too. They are such special people. I don’t know what we at CARE would do without them.

Before the day was over, I had received three phone calls from friends and relatives wishing me a happy birthday. It has been a very good day.

We are still under rather rigid rules regarding our safety – at least until May 4. Then, the CARE staff and/or CARE board will make a decision on how to proceed after that.

I am well and feel safe here. I haven’t felt the isolation so much as have some of the others because I have at least some social interaction. There are about a dozen of us who go to the dining room for breakfast every day. We have to sit far apart but we can at least have some conversation. Then about 8-10 of us exercise together, being careful to follow the six-foot social distancing there, too. There are also a few of us who attend vespers services each Sunday evening. Those who don’t do any of these things are feeling the social isolation more keenly.

So far, there have been 18 reported cases of COVID-19 in Polk County but no virus-related deaths. I feel very sorry for all the people who have lost loved ones and for those who have lost their jobs. I can only imagine the struggles they are experiencing now. I certainly hope that this pandemic will play out very soon.
