The DMZ

Today we booked a car and driver to tour the former demilitarized zone that seperated North and South Vietnam, and the centre of the most intense fighting of the Vietnam War. It was remarkable to see the craters and bombed out remains that remain all around this area, as well as to walk inside the tunnels and bunkers that had been used by the Vietcong. Seeing how rugged an unpassable much of this terain is it is easy to imagine how difficult the fighting here would have been.

The most interesting stop of the day was Vihn Moc tunnels a former VC supply base most of which was located more than 23 Meters underground. The tunnels stretch over a 20 km or more underground network were thousands of soilders and civilians were housed for almost 7 years, and in which 15 babies were born. It is remarkable to see the conditions that they lived in and their incredible ingenuity.
