Washington's Headquarters - stayed here 1 1/2 years

This was a free day to do what we wanted. Everybody went on a river cruise. We went about an hour downstream as far as West Point and then came back. It was very cloudy but we did not get rained on. We ate lunch in a small place before the cruise. They weren't open, but we talked them into opening an hour early so 10 of us could eat there. The cruise was real nice and we lucked out rain wise. It gave us a great view of all the mansions on the banks of the Hudson, and a view of West Point from the water.

After that 6 of us went to George Washington's Headquarters. This is where Washington spent the last 18 months of the war. He had the British cornered in New York and that led them into ending the war. I would have taken more pictures, but the camera batteries went dead. We got a young women to guide us through the house and give us a very thorough explanation of what Washington was doing and the house. The house is intact from Washington's days. The house was borrowed by Washington and about 30 after the war the family moved on. The house was vacant from 1827 until 1850 when it was given to the State of New York. This is the first publicly owned house in the US. It was quite a eye opener to see how they lived in those days. Martha stayed there in the winter.
