First view of Lake Wanaka , very choppy and windy

Lake Hawea was so calm and tranquil

The drive from the Haast pass to Wanaka was very different. The scenery was more dramatic and the mountains easier to see because we had lost the forests on the mountains through which we had been driving alot of the time. The mountains were now either bare rock or very low shrubs and different colours and types of grasses.

It was very windy driving south along the shores of Lake Wanaka but to reach Wanaka itself you had to cross to another lake (Lake Hawea) half way down to avoid some steep mountains and this lake was amazingly sheltered and had fabulous reflections in it.
