Annapurna Sanctuary & Mt. Everest Base Camp Treks travel blog

Once again the agenda was changed and we will trek from Namche Bazaar to Phakding. We had a leisurely start and started trekking at 10:30 a.m. The trail descends the huge hill from Namche. I haven't mentioned the yaks. They are the most amazing pack animals I have seen. They are very docile and slow moving and sure footed. They seem to be uncomfortable around people. We pass lots of them on the trail.

Also, a note about the porters. Our personal bags weigh from 10-13 kilos. That's from 22-29 pounds. In Annapurna our personal porters carried 2 bags. Here they carry 3. You do the math - that's alot. Then there are porters that carry goods to the upper teahouses: beer, soda, snack food, eggs, kerosene, etc. We've seen porters carrying plywood and building supplies. These porters carry about 100 lbs or more. It's amazing, and these are not easy trails.

We stayed at a beautiful place in Phakding. We each have a bathroom. No more running down the hall to the toilet with your flashlight and toilet paper, and don't forget to put shoes on because the toilets are gross. This was luxury, but the shower was cold so I skipped washing my hair. We played pool and cards and hung out till 10:30 p.m.

This is the day we found out about the volcano eruption on Iceland. The ash plume spread over UK, Ireland & Scotland, and about 8 people on this trip are very concerned about whether they will be able to fly home. Thankfully, I'm going the other direction via Bangkok.
