|We arrived and it was raining and cool which was lovely after the searing heat of Mendoza. We walked around a while and then met Sabine at our hostel. We went to a restaurant near by the hostel (Dona Salta) and we had some local food (Locro). It was average, but we had to try it ! We then went on to some bars in Balcarce where it was exceptionally busy as it was a saturday night. By the end of the night we had managed to empty a few bottles of wine !
On Sunday we had a walk around the market in Balcarce and the rest of the town. In the afternoon we walked around San Martin park and all the locals were out with their families just milling around and enjoying the afternoon. We took the cable car up to the mountain overlooking Salta and walked down from the top. In the evening we went to a great restaurant (El Solar del Convento).
The day after was horse riding. We went to a town 12km away from Salta and went riding in the green countryside with hills all around us. It was really relaxing and peaceful. This was one of Monica's highlights. The horses were great and could be controlled easily !
We were all walking like John Wayne after the 3 hr trip ! In the evening we went to see some local music at La Viaja de estacion, where we ate as well. The music was like Irish folk music and the food was decidedly average ! After a few more drinks we were ready for bed.
Culture was the order of the following day. We did a couple of museums and churches as Salta is an old Colonial town with lots of nice buildings.
In the evening we were going to see a football game (kick off 10pm). We had re-arranged two sets of bus tickets and three hostels to make the game between Boca Juniors and Independiente ! It was a summer tournament being played between the best teams in Argentina. We arrived at the ground an hour early and it was already filling up. We had really good tickets and they were only US 11 each ! The game was excellent with Boca winning 2 - 0. The first goal was an overhead kick and the second a header from a good cross. The atmosphere was amazing and the ground was almost full to capacity. There were flares and smoke canisters going off around the ground. There was even good food and drinks at half time !
At the end of the game we headed out and followed the crowds until we picked up a taxi back to our hostel.
