Larry & Lee Ann's Journey travel blog

Don launching the drift boat...

It's beautiful here in the harbor...

Must have lost my fish here, I look pretty grouchy!

This guy swam along with us for a bit...

And she greeted us each and every pass today, LOL!

Looking back toward town, that bridge is Hwy 101...

We just spotted 'our' whale...

If I hadn't been so scared, I'd have got a shot like...

Instead I got this, check out all the barnacles on it...

She just kept coming back to us, and she was 3 times...

This guy is Larry's best friend...

Every time we change our bait they are there to out dive...

This crazy seagull was trying to fight for it, even though it...

I think it said "Thank you Larry"!!!!

He swam over to join the action...

Isn't that a cute face???

Fun to watch...

Well, it's time to head in, hope you enjoyed the day, we...

Oh my, what a day! The weatherman called for a 40% chance of rain for today so we were thrilled to find blue skies and plenty of sunshine this morning. In fact, it turned out to be a beautiful day. We had a nice breakfast and gathered up a few snacks before Don picked us up to go get our fishing licenses. Tom had to work today, so it was just the three of us. We sure appreciate being able to use his drift boat the past few days. Makes us feel a little guilty to be having so much fun while he's working. But he assured us he doesn't mind. He's glad someone is able to enjoy fishing in this beautiful weather. Now to the bottom line. I got hit hard, got a little anxious trying to make sure I set the hook, and the darn thing snatched my bait and got away! Oh no, I could have cried!!! It was the one and only hit we had. In fact, we did not see anyone catch in the estuary today. Yesterday, five were caught including Larry's 22 lb, 34 incher.

But we think we know why. There was a huge humpback whale in the area today. It was just past the end of the jetty and we watched it spout several times. So the next time we reached the end of the jetty, we pulled our lines in and ventured further out into the open waters. We watched the whale come up and then go down a couple of times and then it disappeared. We were scanning the horizon (with my camera in hand of course) and I had just asked Don if we were safe in such a 'little' boat when I got my answer. All of a sudden it rose up underneath our boat, with it's head right under Larry's seat!!!! We literally could have reached out and touched it! I was so scared, I forgot to take the picture!!! About the time I thought we might tip, it dove down. Don and I were looking at each other with eyes as big as saucers. I don't know what my blood pressure was, but I bet it would have scared my doctor! LOL It reappeared a bit further away, but every time it came up I was so busy looking at it I forgot to get the camera up to shoot. I have to look through the view finder with my Nikon D-50 and I didn't want to miss seeing it with my eyes. I did get a nice shot of all the barnacles on it as it dove the last time before we decided to leave it in peace.

So, even though the salmon eluded our hooks today, we had a wonderful time with the seals, the pelicans and the whale! And the beautiful scenery of course. Brookings is one of our favorite places. After we spend a few more years exploring this wonderful United States, we plan to pick 4-5 'favorites' to spend the year in. This will definitely be one of those 4 or 5. If you've never traveled Pacific Coast Hwy 101, I highly recommend it. I especially love the portion between Gold Beach and Harris Beach. And an added benefit is the California Redwoods, about 25 miles south of here. We plan to visit them later this week.

After we came back in, we jumped in the shower and headed over to Tom & Lisa's. Kelly made lasagna for dinner for all of us. And Tom did a salad and garlic bread. We all enjoyed a National Geographic program on the Great Barrier Reef afterward. Wow, what an awesome place. I had no idea there are so many unusual things swimming in the sea! And I certainly didn't expect a whale to swim up to our boat to visit! So that's how we spent our day. How was yours?
