Tonight I went with Vida Tebby to a concert by the Livingston Swing Band at the First Baptist Church. The program this time was rock and roll and ‘50s and ‘60s music, most of which were familiar to me. The seventeen musicians are very versatile, so there is something for everyone. As the band played, there were overhead slides of the artists who had made the selections famous.
One of the most impressive solos was “Yackaty Sax” by Dr. Jimmy Simmons, former president of Lamar University. His fingers were flying! I also enjoyed a duet of “Fever” by band director Gerald Fagan and Angie Atkins.
On December 18 they will present a concert of Christmas music at Central Baptist Church. I’m looking forward to that one, too.
