|We took an early 30 minute flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we then boarded a motorised canoe up river having lunch on board the canoe as we traveled to our lodge in the Madre de Dios Area.
In the afternoon we headed into the jungle with our local guide to seek out the magnificent fauna and flora of the jungle. The guides taught us about the medicinal properties and practical uses of the plants along the way.
The lodge is eco-friendly and combines low-impact architecture with traditional native style. Rooms are simple, but comfortable with flush toilets (Yay!) showers -cold water only (grrr), mosquito nets and kerosene lamps for light.
Two boys in our group are daring enough to try a psychotropic, Arawaska ceremony, tomorrow night which is held with a Shaman to induce a trance, from what I hear after being violently ill from the 'poison'. Anyone who watches 'Tribe' will have seen the episode where the guy experienced this. Enough to put me off!
I on the other hand will be having a well earned massage and facial!
