The next morning we headed right over to the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park. There is one campground in there with only 12 sites and no hookups - and no reservations - first come first served. We drove through the campground and it was full. So we drove on to one end of the scenic drive, decided to save our energy for an afternoon hike, and gave the campground another look. It must have been the magic hour since many of the site were empty - only a half-hour later! We grabbed a great one and it was wonderful. After lunch, we went for a hike on the White Rim Overlook trail and were the only ones there - a beautiful view and a distant glimpse of the Colorado River way below. The night was beautiful with a gorgeous sunset way out there in the middle of nowhere.
After leaving our campsite in the morning (after a gorgeous sunrise where "Ansel Adams - Tom" captured the beauty), we went for a short hike to see Mesa Arch - really great. There is a highway near Moab that goes along the Colorado River with fantastic redrock walls. We ate lunch at a pullout over the river and watched rafters and whitewater kayakers in the swift river. Then we went into Moab and found a very nice campground right in the middle of town near a grocery store and a good restaurant - The Moab Brewery. Supper at the Brewery was delicious and their gelato is ooh-la-la!
