Hope a train does not come the other way!...road sharing the same...

I spy the Franz Joseph glacier... from sentinel rock

In front of the glacier face where the water emerges

You can see why this was called reflections lake.. you will not...

Another glorious start to the day... we cannot believe how lucky we are being with the weather. We had an early start and had lovely views of the snow capped mountains as we left Greymouth. We travelled down beside the transalpine scenic railway track (apart from when we shared bridgeswith the trains) for quite along way before the track turned off to go across Arthurs pass. The scenery was then changed between flat farmland with VERY VERY straight roads which were on flood plains of deltas formed ?????years ago and then uplifted (there were hills at end of the flat plains and the river reformed to pass through these hills!) and winding roads up over natural forested hills to the next river flat plain.

We got to Franz Josef township at 12 noon and had a fab walk/scramble over pebbles/small rocks left in the flat bottom of the valley by the retreating glacier to the glacier face, which was very imposing and much bigger than you would think from a distance.

After moving onto Fox glacier where we are doing our helihike tomorrow we went for an evening cycle round and found a fab lake to cycle/walk round. It was so peaceful and calm... hence the reflections in the lake. The weather was very threatening black with rainbows over the mountains so we hope it clears up before tomorrow morning.
