Stonehedge with Alice

Stonehedge with tom

Stonehedge with both!

The Long Barow

Up at 5:30 and get dressed, then our luggage outside the door by 6:45. Clean up the room and then head down to a full English breakfast. Alice tried the blood pudding and it was not to her liking! Otherwise it was a nice meal.

Met the people on the tour in the lobby and our guide, Julie-Ann and the 40 other people who will share our adventure. After a quick intro we boarded the bus and headed out of town. We drove for some time in heavy traffic then finally hit the motorway.

Quick stop for toilet as we were running late and arrived at Stonehenge about 10:30 – just as 50 other busses pulled in. It was quite the zoo! We got on the transit bus to take us the 1.5 miles to the site and walked around. Hundreds of people rather distracted from the feeling of being in touch with the past, but it was nice to see the monument.

We walked over to Long Barrow – one of a series of graves in earthen mounds. They had become the playground of children with kids tumbling down the sides and a deep path right over the top. I wondered what the ancient kings would have thought.

Back on the bus and to the interpretive center – but we had almost no time so we bought some souvenirs and some lunch, then got in line for the transit bus. We boarded, thinking they would take us to the bus park but it took us all the way back to the monument – then back so we were about 10 minutes late. The tour director found us and kept her cool (which was remarkable) then we headed off to Bath.
