Coalinga to Las Vegas
We got an early start today, as we were hoping to get all the way to Las Vegas. This would put our arrival time a day earlier than expected, as we had travelled further on Tuesday than expected. This would also give us a little longer time in Vegas - not that we needed any more time to pay our Vegas taxes!!!!
Today's drive was fairly non-eventful. Not too much to take pictures of either. If we had more time, it would have been fun to visit the Calico Ghost town, as we had stopped off nearby to get gas and make lunch. But duty called, and we kept going. Certainly the desert was a little different for us, and then there was a REALLY long uphill climb before reaching California. We had taken I-5 to Hwy 46, cut over to 99, then took 58 over to I-15. I suspect there was a name for this pass, but I didn't get it. At any rate it was a long 16 mile steady uphill climb at some mountain pass just before reaching Nevada on Hwy 15. Good test of the truck. Third gear and 40 mph for about 10 miles - just me and the trucks. Kinda boring for the passenger though.
Weather has been good thus far. Clear and warm. We arrived Las Vegas around 3 p.m. and 1190 miles from our start at Forest Grove. It's always "fun" driving through a major metro area when I have no idea where I'm going, and DON'T want to miss my turnoffs. The boys know not to say anything during those moments!!
I had made preliminary reservations at a Thousand Trails Park, which is a membership we have. Only downside is that it is located about 5 miles from the strip.
That first night we just went to a nearby Casino - the Boulder Station - as we didn't want to hassle with public transportation and get lost or something. We were also a bit worn out from the long day. But you know Ryan - he HAD to try something. After all, we were in Vegas. We were also fortunate that the Boulder Station had a decent buffet, so............
