We left Cape Town for the Wine Lands. We arrived firstly at Stellenbosch and then onto Franschock. The drive to these places was spectacular (the whole time we thought we were in France). Franschock was a lovely quaint town we stayed there for one night in a log cabin set within the vineyards. Plenty of wine estates I think over one hundred in Stellenbosh alone.
After the Wine lands we drove to Hermanus and stayed for two nights. Our self catering apartment overlooked the bay. Within the bay are Southern Right Whales, approx 40ft long (huge things). They come to Hermanus shallow water to breed and rare their young from late May until end of November then they head to the Antarctic during the summer months to feed. Its the only place in the world you can see whales from the shore. We decided to take a boat cruse to get up close. This was fantastic!! We were next to a mother and her young, then later we were next to two males fighting for the attention of a female. The female was trying to swim away and more or less playing chase by going under and around our boat it was unreal.
After Hermanus we set off on the Garden route. This is supposed to be the big tourist thing to do in South Africa but to be honest we were not that impressed it was green and nice but just like driving from cork to Killarney!!! nothing unusual for us. Suppose if you were not from Ireland then yes it was green and wonderful.
Pictures of whales etc on there way, they are not uploaded yet.
