Traffic jam leaving Rome

View from our hotel in Rome

So, today we travelled to Rome. An early start to leave the hotel at 7am to get to heathrow in plenty of time, which we duly did.

The flight was typically uneventful with cloud cover most of the way until we reached the Alps when the cloud disappeared for us to see the European Alps covered in their winter snow blanket. An absolutely stunning sight!

Our arrival at Rome greeted us with pouring rain and 10C temps. We were met by the shuttle service which just turned out to be a rather nice BMW car with leather interior and seats. The driver must have been a typical Italian as he drove at 150kmph in a 110 kmph zone. I must admit it was strange driving on the right hand side of the road, something we have never experienced before.

The hotel is rather nice although is a fair way from the city centre, not that it worries us as we are off on our tour tomorrow. Went for a short walk through the streets while he rain had stopped. Parking here is amazing, one just finds a spot and slips the car in - photos to follow on this. The little "SMART" cars are popular and necessary.

We had dinner at the hotel and practised a few Italian phrases with the cameriera (waitress). Another early night with an in house movie to watch.
