Diamond Lil enters the Mighty Mississippi

The stunning scenery between Grafton and Alton, IL

Fast Eddie's Bonair

The View of St. Louis from the Arch

Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals

Diamond Lil and Captain John and I are taking a break from cruising at the Alton Marina in Alton, IL on the Mighty Mississippi River. John is busy installing his new Follow Me Satellite TV dish. We rented a car so that we could visit St. Louis, Gateway to the West. Unfortunately there is nowhere in St. Louis to stay with the boat so this was recommended to us as the place to stay. We got a reasonable weekly rate and have a nice pool, laundry facilities, internet and are under a covered slip which is great because at the moment it is pouring cats and dogs with thunder and lightening.

We have the car for three days. The first day we shopped for all the supplies John needs to install the dish and visited Fast Eddie's Bonair which we were told is a must-see. Originally established in 1921, it has become the hot spot of the Midwest. We feasted on 29cent jumbo shrimp, 99 cent burgers and cheap beer. The place holds 420 people, a little crowded for the Captain's liking but I loved the excitement. It took a while wandering around looking for a spot to sit, but once seated we had a great, cheap meal.

Yesterday we took the car into St. Louis, about 45 minutes away from Alton, across the bridge in Missouri. I took a ride to the top of the 630 foot arch for a great view of the city and the big river below. We browsed around the Museum and saw an excellent movie on a huge screen about Lewis and Clark and their expedition from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean back in 1804-05. The photography of the stunning scenery along their trip was amazing and their hardships make our travels seem like a breeze in comparison.

Mary and Dennis arrived on Christine Marie yesterday. We had cocktails and dinner on their upper deck and caught up on each other's experiences over the last week or so.
