We explored Coober Pedy a bit more today, popping in and out of the underground boutiques selling opals and some underground art galleries. We also checked out the underground church next to our hostel. Guess what? It's Sts. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church!!!!!! We got married in Sts. Peter and Paul in Vancouver almost a year ago!!
Next, we headed across town to the local golf course. If any of you golfers out there don't like playing in the beach (sand traps), this would be quite nightmarish for you!!! The whole course is on sand/dirt (the landscape is barren, remember?) !!! The greens were oiled patches of dirt. It would have been really neat to play this course, but at 10am in the morning, it was already a scorcher.
We then headed on to Crocodile Harry's underground home. His place was featured in the film 'Mad Max III', and is adorned inside and out with original artwork and sculptures of local and visiting artists. Hundreds of bras and panties hung from the ceiling of his kitchen. There were crocodile sculptures popping out of a couple of alcoves here and there, and the wall carried well wishes and greetings from thousands of visitors who have stopped by. Harry has lived here for 30 years!! He's a very nice fellow and quite the character!!
Then it was time to move on and head south again. Gradually, the mines became fewer and far between, and the familiar red dirt and scrub brush returned. By the time we got to Port Augusta, passed a few nice lakes and had seen another beautiful sunset in the outback.
