I enjoyed a very special day today. It was my day off and I deserved a great day after a very stressful 6 days at work. My job had been loading and unloading folks, many of whom were kids, on and off the Sky Lift, a chair lift that transverses the park. The chairs are heavy...maybe 150 lbs or more and they don't stop unless by the operator and for a reason. Unloading, the riders see two signs as they near the station and we call out loudly to exit to the left, follow the path, point and repeat. A good 20% of both adults and kids exit straight (to be hit from behind if we don't hold or lift that chair as we yell) or to the right ---into the lane of a chair coming at them from another direction. Many near misses. A few falling on their faces (usually women in flip flops). I was drained at the end of each shift. Thank goodness we are sent to a new ride each week. My next one is going to be fun.

Back to today. I drove straight north to the top of Iowa to the darling little town of Clear Lake. Two more hours and I would've been in Minneapolis. But Clear Lake was my destination and it gave me more than I had expected. My first stop was to visit the Surf Ballroom...the venue where Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper played their last gig. Each February they have a Winter Dance Party celebrating the lives of those lost on that fateful plane ride February 3, 1959. And shows still go on during the rest of the year.

The building houses the large ballroom with tables, chairs and stage, just as it looked way back when. And in addition, a wonderful museum surrounds the ballroom. I didn't expect to be able to see the ballroom, but it was all a part of the area where one could wander. Open to the public Monday through Friday. Real shows are performed on the weekends.

After a good visit at the Surf, I then drove 6 miles out of town to where their plane crashed that stormy night. The site is on private property, but the owner allows folks to follow the fence to where the plane hit the ground. It never should have happened. The plane never should have left the ground.

Clear Lake is on a beautiful pristine lake and every street is lined with wonderful homes. I've posted photos of some of my favorites.
