Hostel Zocalo

On the Roof of the Hostel Zocalo

Hostel Zocalo

Danny made everyone breakfast this morning...scrambled eggs, refried beans and leftover fish and seafood....delicious!! Estephen and Virginia rode with us to Merida where they will get a "collectivo" to Valledolid. Just a 2 1/2 hour drive to Merida.

Found a hostel right away...Hostel Zocalo right next to the town square. What a great hostel!!! Trina and Moses are the owners. The best part about this hostel is by far the breakfast. Moses cooks a full breakfast every morning, which is included in the price (about $8 a night per person)...scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, fruit of all kinds and cereal. He spares no expense to make sure everyone has enough to eat.

We met a very interesting character, John, from Maryland, who was getting a root canal and cap for $400 from a U.S. Dentist working in Mexico. He explained that it's cheaper and much more enjoyable to come here in the winter to get dental work. He shared his last Kahlua and cream with us...then Moses came by with a new bottle of Kahlua under his shirt...set it on the table...and kept walking. What a host!!

While dining on our amazing "Moses" breakfast, we met people from Sweden, Washington State and Germany...staying at hostels has been a great experience in meeting interesting people. We took a walk to the artesian market....saw the weirdest display of jewelry ever...as I looked inside a bowl at the jewelry...it began to move. When I looked closer, I realized that the jewelry was attached to spiders!!! Saw another that used big beetles...kind of strange, but definitely got my attention. on to Valladolid....
